FAQs

Using Locked Talk

Is it allowed, and does it actually work?

Yes. Locked Talk works in the vast majority of UK prisons and is already used by customers nationwide without issue. We provide real UK landline numbers using established telephony infrastructure, specifically suited to prison calling systems.

If, in the unlikely event, the service does not work at a particular prison, and you notify us within 14 days of taking out the service without having used it, we will issue a full refund.

Are you affiliated with any prisons or the prison service?

No. Locked Talk is an independent service provider and is not affiliated with any prison or correctional facility. Our role is simply to help prisoners and their families stay in contact more affordably.

Does this work with all prisons?

Locked Talk works with the majority of UK prisons. Prison phone systems vary slightly, but our service is designed to be compatible with standard prison calling arrangements.

Pricing & Plans

How much does it cost?

You pay a simple monthly fee based on your chosen plan. This covers call forwarding to your mobile.

What is the prisoner charged?

The prisoner is charged standard landline rates by the prison's phone provider. This is significantly cheaper than calling a mobile directly.

Are there any setup fees or hidden charges?

No. There are no setup fees, no hidden charges, and no long-term contracts.

Family & Shared Numbers

Can I share the service with family or friends?

Yes. All plans except the Starter plan allow you to add additional numbers so calls can be forwarded to family members or friends.

Do I need to decide this when signing up?

No. You can start with just one number and add additional people later from your account.

Setup & Testing

How long does setup take?

Most numbers are ready within minutes to a few hours. Occasionally it may take slightly longer, depending on the area code selected.

Can I test the number before giving it to the prisoner?

Yes. The number we provide is a standard UK landline number. Once you receive it, you can test it by calling it once or twice before sharing it with the prisoner.

Because the number rings your mobile, you'll need to call it from another phone or ask someone else to ring it - otherwise you'd be calling yourself.

Prisoner & PIN Information

How is the number added to the prisoner's PIN?

You will need to give the number to the prisoner. They must then submit it to the prison administration team to be added to their approved PIN list. The exact process varies slightly by prison, but it is usually straightforward.

Can the prisoner keep my mobile number on their PIN as well?

Yes - and we recommend it. Most prisoners add both the landline number we provide and your mobile number. This means that if you ever cancel the service, or if there were any temporary issues, calls can still continue using the mobile number.

What happens if the prisoner is transferred to another prison?

The service follows the prisoner. The landline number stays the same. As long as the new prison allows the number on their approved PIN list, calls can continue without interruption.

Managing Your Account

Am I locked into a contract?

No. You pay monthly and can cancel at any time.

What happens if I cancel?

Your service will stop at the end of your billing period. There are no cancellation penalties.

What happens if I change my mobile number?

Just let us know and we'll update the system for you. There's no need to set anything up again - calls will simply start forwarding to your new number.

Security & Trust

Is payment secure?

Yes. All payments are processed securely through our payment providers. We do not store your card details.

Is my information kept private?

Yes. We only collect the information required to provide the service and operate in line with UK data protection laws.
